Now it’s April and we can enjoy the spring sunshine (and showers!). Beautiful fresh green leaves are appearing on the trees, where just the week before there were bare branches. Many plants are now bursting into flower such as lilac, peonies and choisya. Bluebells are appearing in woods, parks and gardens.
Look out for...
Tulips – a rainbow of colours from these favourite bulbs
Camellias – in full bloom now with intense red, pink and white flowers
Choisya ternata – dark green leaves with delicate white scented flowers
Good time to...
Divide clumps of bamboo
Sow grass seed to fill bare patches of lawn
Tie in clematis and honeysuckle climbers
Sow herbs and plant up strawberry plants
Gardens in the news
The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew are beautiful year round, but in spring the gardens are
particularly uplifting with the trees coming into new leaf and gorgeous blossoms. The treetop walkway and the Hive installation, and the reopening
of the grand Victorian Temperate House, are also highlights.
