Urban Garden Crystal Palace

Client Brief

This garden had been neglected for some time and the clients wanted to create a usable space for relaxing and entertaining.
A lawn area was required and the client was keen to create space for new planting as well. A small seating area was requested in which to sit and enjoy the new planting.

Design & Solution

The design and layout of this garden was created to give a sense of greater space, the curved lawn softens the square dimensions of the boundaries and gives a relaxed feel to the garden. The layout provides good planting space for a variety of plants to add to the feel of the garden through their forms, textures and colours. These can be enjoyed from the seating area in the corner providing a place to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

The garden was initially cleared and the whole garden was rotivated to break up the compacted ground. The lawn area was defined and the seating area built with membrane, golden pea shingle and edged with the same bricks as the house. A simple clean low maintenance finish.

The beds were prepared with Rolawn beds & borders topsoil ready for planting. The planting emphasis was on bold evergreen forms and ranged from evergreen ground cover such as Pachysandra terminalis and Heuchera 'Purple Palace' to the exciting forms of Dryopteris affinis and Polystichum setiferum mixing well with the coarse leaves of the Fatsia japonica. The beautiful golden yellow stems of Phyllostachys aureus act as a excellent screen at the rear of the garden providing a lovely rustling sound in the wind. Climbers were planted to provide vertical interest and soften the fence panels.

The lawn was laid with Rolawn Medallion turf giving a lush instant green carpet transforming this garden into a colourful relaxed space for the client to enjoy
