April is an uplifting time, as we enjoy Spring sunshine and the breathtaking sights of luxuriant blossom on cherry, apple and lilac trees. It’s exciting to see lush new green leaves appearing on once-bare branches. Everything is growing, new shoots and buds are full and ready to burst, and birdsong fills the air.
Look out for...
Tulips – multi-coloured and cheerful, brightening up gardens, parks and green spaces everywhere
Choisya varieties – a favourite garden shrub, coming into flower now
Pieris 'Forest Flame' – a very interesting shrub, deep red new spring leaves and white bell-like pendant flowers
Good time to...
Start this season’s lawn care
Tie in clematis, honeysuckle and rose climbers
Prune forsythia taking out old wood
Sow herbs and vegetables, and plant up strawberry plants
Gardens in the news
The RHS is encouraging us to put down our smartphones and tablets, and get gardening for wellbeing, as part of its Greening Great Britian initiative. See the article here for easy gardening tips, such as sowing meadow flower seeds and replanting pots with new summer bedding.
Now it’s spring with hopefully warmer weather, why not combine a short break with viewing some lovely gardens around the UK.
